Menadione sodium bisulphite (IUPAC name: 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-methyl-1,4-dioxo-2naphthalenesulfonic acid, sodium salt trihydrate).
Synonyms: vitamin K3, MSB.
Is identified by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number 6147-37-1 and the European Inventory of Existing Chemical Substances (EINECS) number 204-987-0 (anhydrous).

Additive has to be incorporated in premixture. Directly dosage to mixed feed is not recommended.
Its molecular weight is 330.29. It has a melting point of 121–124 °C, a bulk density of approximately 700–800 kg/m3 and is freely soluble in water (0.5 g/mL), slightly soluble in alcohol and almost insoluble in benzene and diethyl ether.
MSB is a free-flowing white to yellowish crystalline, practically odorless, powder. The additive
contains by specification ≥ 51.5 % menadione, ≤ 13 % water (as hydrate), ≤ 45 ppm Cr. The minimum content of menadione would correspond to 98 % MSB trihydrate complex.
Discovered in the 'forties Menadione Sodium Bisulphite (MSB), Vitamin K3 is water-soluble form, that practically solved the problem of assimilation and irritability, but certainly not that of stability (the product is in fact unstable and, when mixed in feed integrators, it loses its activity in the space of a few weeks). Menadione Sodium Bisulfite (MSB) is a white free-flowing powder; contains a min. of 51,5% menadione, uncoated, water soluble, not very stable in feeds but satisfactory for pharmaceutical preparations. Due to its ease of use and its high solubility in water it is extensive used till now.

Fair progress was made in the 'fifties with the introduction of MSBC, Menadione Sodium Bisulphite Complex, consisting of menadione sodium bisulphite crystallized with 3 moles of NaHSO3 and 3 of H2O, with a roughly 33% menadione content.
Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (MSBC) is a white free-flowing powder; contains a min. of 33% menadione, water soluble and one stability between MSB and MPB.
This product undoubtedly has better stability than MSB, but not such as to guarantee the activity required in premixes after a lengthy storage period (at least 4 - 6 months), but due to its ease of use and its high solubility in water it is extensive used even today in many cases.
